On January 13 Bohola GAA Club was formed. The Club was launched under the leadership of Chairman: Rev. M McManus, Hon. Sec: Joe McEvey, Treasurer: Willie Malee.
Bohola won Junior East Mayo Title. They beat Charlestown by 2-11 to 0-2. The team on that day was: M. Lavin, P. Roche, V. McHale, P. Ruane, E. Jordan, W. Malee, T.J. Molloy, J. Lavin, M. Clarke, W. Evans, B. Clarke, P. Kilcoyne, J. Malee.
The team was captained by Micksey Clarke who was the first Mayo County player to catch the ball under the "New Rules" (4 centrefield men only in for the throw-in). He was playing at centrefield against Meath.

In January 1974 a group comprising of footballers and supporters drawn from the Bohola, Straide and Foxford areas met at a special meeting in the old Bohola School then situated at the rear of the Parish Church. At that meeting it was decided to form a Bohola football club. There was some scepticism about the ability of the to sustain a football club give the large scale emigration at the time, but wiser councilr prevailed and then Parish priest Fr Martin Mac Manus R.I.P. was installed as the first Chairman of the club with Joe Mc Evey being the first secretary of the club and Willie Malee becoming the clubs first treasurer.

In its very first year in existence the club surprised the football fraternity throughout the county by winning the Divisional Junior Title against Charlestown defeating a fancied Charlestown, later defeating Lacken in the County Semi final and narrowly loosing to Islandeady in the County final.
